Public Hearings / Hearing Publics: A Pragmatic Approach to Applying Ethics

ABSTRACT

Starting from the pragmatic position that ethical theory and practice should be seen as distinct phases of a unified activity, I address the question of what the practical phase of ethics is. It becomes apparent, however, that there is little provision in our society for this kind of activity.

I describe some conditions necessary for the deliberate application of the experimental method in applying ethics, and propose one example of such a practice that would be valuable both for ethical philosophy and for the communities in which it is implemented.
